Name:
Terry
Age: 20+
Contact: stocke@Plurk
Character(s) Played: n/a

IC
Name: Velin Qestir
Canon: Final Fantasy XIV
Canon Point: Patch 5.2
Age: Somewhere between 24-25

Appearance: Green catperson.
Things of note that aren't visible above: he has two scars on his face, one across his right eye and one on his left cheek, as well as a multitude of misc. scars over his body. He also has two tattoos - one is a green stripe across his nose, just barely visible under his visor, and the other is the Scion symbol on his upper left back.

Abilities:
  • The Echo: Actually more like a collection of related abilities. In this case:
    • Seeing other people's memories (but not at will).
    • Understanding any language.
    • Immunity to some (but not most) kinds of magical brainwashing.
    • Revival from death nerfed for game!
  • Dragoon abilities: For simplicity, this is gonna translate to:
    • Being able to jump absurdly high/far.
    • Being able to survive the kind of jumps and impacts that would normally break your arms and legs (but only if he deliberately initiated it, accidentally fall off a cliff and he's still wrecked).
    • Having flashy magical special effects when fighting with a polearm weapon.
    • If he jumps the right way his landing will set the immediate vicinity around him on fire. Dragon fire
    • (He's going to be locked to Dragoon, at least at time of app)
  • Blessing of Light: To anyone who can see souls/magical auras/anything of the like, Velin will appear to imbued with Light. ...otherwise does more or less nothing in a game!
  • Soroban's Blessing: He can breathe underwater. In game, this will be nerfed to be unreliable - he can do it in normal circumstances, but as soon as fae are involved, it may or may not work!

Personality:
  • Quiet extrovert
  • Goes with the flow in his own life
  • ...but very stubborn once he's convinced of something
  • Dedicated in others' causes
  • Wants to be liked, but uncomfortable with serious fame
  • Feels responsible for others' well-being
  • Expressive; bad at hiding emotions
  • Long fuse, eventual icy cold temper
  • Not risk-averse, often reckless
  • Can be a snarky little ass
  • Thinks of himself as brawn, not brains...
  • ...but wants to learn and is quietly insecure about his lack of education

History:
  • Born to a pair of Miqo'te (cat people) traveling in the Far East as part of a merchant caravan - they didn't have the resources to support a child due to an unexpected run of bad luck, so eventually the Qestir tribe at Reunion agreed to take him in.
  • Has a complicated relationship with his adoptive parents - he loves them, but raising a young cat in a tribe of Xaela (scaled not-cats), especially a tribe that has a cultural taboo against talking, is not easy. In his teenage years the relationship was very strained.
  • Adored his adventurous, supportive older sister. Felt betrayed when she left the Steppe (home of all the Xaela tribes) without him upon reaching adulthood.
  • It didn't stop him from doing the same thing to chase after her, six years later. He failed to find any leads so he just kept going to see the world. It's something he would've wanted anyway; he was just picturing doing it together.
  • Traveled solo for roughly another year, having low-key adventures and mostly enjoying himself, but feeling purposeless. Eventually he ended up in the region of Eorzea (more specifically Gridania), where the FFXIV story started.
  • This is going to be an attempt to grab just the main points of like 500 hours of gameplay, bear with me.
  • A Realm Reborn:
    • After doing general adventuring stuff for a bit, Velin was discovered to have an ability known as the Echo and recruited by the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. They're a group dedicated to stopping primals (summoned magical beings treated as gods) and the Ascians (apparent immortals who are trying to cause nation-ending Calamities).
    • Also relevant: the Garlean Empire next door wants to try to conquer all the nations of Eorzea again.
    • Velin defeats several primals, helps thwart various Garlean and Ascian plans, and participates in an assault that drives the Garlean Empire out of Eorzea.
    • The Echo is a sign of being blessed by the main good force/goddess of the world, Hydaelyn. Velin is extra blessed and is labeled the resident Warrior of Light.
    • The neighboring nation of Ishgard reaches out for some primal issues within their borders.
    • Due to political machinations, the Scions are wrongfully accused of assassinating Nanamo, the sultana of one of Eorzea's nations, and forced to flee. Velin takes refuge in Ishgard.
  • Heavensward:
    • Ishgard has had a centuries-running war with the Horde (dragons). In exchange for political asylum, Velin and the other Scions in Ishgard agree to help.
    • Velin and co aim to resolve the war through truce; a party is formed to first find the leader of the heretics (pro-dragon Ishgardians), then parley with dragons.
    • Turns out that a thousand years ago, the Ishgardians were the ones who betrayed and killed a peaceful dragon (of what is functionally dragon royalty). The Ishgardian Church has covered this up and would prefer to continue doing that and fighting dragons.
    • After a lot more work (including killing the pope an Archbishop-turned-primal and stopping a revenge-crazed dragon), the war is ended. There is tentative peace between Ishgard and the remaining dragons.
    • At some point, the Scions have their name cleared re: assassinations of sultanas.
  • Stormblood:
    • Two other nations that the Garlean Empire took over back in the day are Ala Mhigo (next door) and Doma (in the Far East). More Politics forces Eorzea to restart the war with the Garleans and get involved in freeing Ala Mhigo.
    • To stretch the Garlean Empire's resources, the Scions head over to Doma to forment rebellion there.
    • For Velin, this would also mean getting to visit home, as the Steppe is one of the neighboring regions recruited! Eyyy
    • Doma is freed and left under Doman management; the leader agrees to send help to the Ala Mhigan revolution.
    • Ala Mhigo is freed.
    • However, just as stuff is calming down, Scions start falling to a mysterious affliction that sucks their souls out of their bodies.
  • Shadowbringers:
    • ...which turns out to have been someone summoning them to another world! Apparently all the worlds used to be one and an unknown disaster in the past shattered them into fourteen. Velin's is the Source, and the world where most of Shadowbringers is set is the First.
    • The Ascians are from way back when everything was unshattered. They're trying to get that to happen again.
    • Unshattering requires a Calamity on the Source and the death of everyone on the shard world. It also needs an overabundance of one kind of aether on the shard world (such as Darkness or Light).
    • The First is nearly overtaken by Light and the Scions are here to solve the problem! The... lots of problems, what with most of the world already being gone, people getting turned into Sin Eaters, giant Lightwarden monsters that have made it so night never falls.
    • Velin kills some Light things, helps solve some local problems, absorbs a fuckton of Light, nearly accidentally becomes a final boss from too much Light himself.... good times.
    • Also, it's discovered that Hydaelyn is herself a (very, very powerful) primal and caused the shattering, millennia ago. The Ascians were the ones who summoned her and Zodiark, her Dark counterpart (who is currently not around), in order to help with a completely different disaster.
    • But it's fine, everything's fine, the First and the Source are saved from total destruction/a Calamity.
  • As of his current canon point, I assume roughly 4-5 years have passed since the start of FFXIV. He's yet to find his sister but his priorities have shifted a lot with the responsibilities of being a Warrior of Light.

Sample(s): Other:
He will be coming in with his Dreizack glamoured to look like a Bluespirit Spear (aka the weapon he has in the Appearance image), the set of clothes/armour on his back, and various miscellany in his pack - some food, some things like animal skins harvested from hunting, a small sack of glamour prisms, and so on.
Due to handwavey fae trickery, the spear will be hidden in his room and he won't actually realize he has it for at least a few days.
